The Punjab government has revised the names of several public sector universities under a new amendment, bringing changes to the official identities of educational institutions across the province.
Under the decision, Government College University Faisalabad will now be known as Government College, Faisalabad, with the word “University” removed from its name.
The Higher Education Department Punjab issued a notification on October 23, 2026, informing vice chancellors and rectors of public and private sector universities about the revised names under the Public Sector Universities (Amendment) Act, 2026.
The notification stated that the changes follow amendments introduced through the legislation, which the Punjab government published in the Punjab Gazette (Extraordinary) on May 6, 2026.
The department also directed universities to take further necessary action in accordance with the amended law. However, the change will only affect the institution's official name. Its mandate and functions related to higher education will remain unchanged.
