Pakistan’s Indus Basin Irrigation System (IBIS) is widely recognized as the world’s largest continuous irrigation network, playing a vital role in supporting the country’s agricultural economy and food production.

Fed by the Indus River and its five major tributaries, the vast irrigation system extends across more than 58,500 kilometers of canals and approximately 1.6 million kilometers of farm channels. The network supplies water to nearly 45 million acres of farmland, helping sustain crops and livelihoods across the country.

The system is considered one of Pakistan’s most significant engineering and agricultural assets, enabling large-scale irrigation in regions that depend heavily on a reliable water supply for farming activities.

Its scale and reach continue to highlight the importance of the Indus River system in supporting agriculture, economic development, and food security for millions of people.
